September Rucking Challenge
The Challenge:
Ruck 1 mile
Ruck UP 3960 stairs (220 stories)
Ruck 4 miles
Let's do this
This month we remember the lives lost 20 years ago on September 11, 2001. We’ll ruck 1 mile representing the distance around the pentagon. The 3960 stairs equal the 110 stories in each of the twin towers. The 4 miles remember the 4th plane lost in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
Difficulty:
Serious Rucker: Do it all in one ruck.
All Other Ruckers: Split up the rucks as needed.
Weight:
Rucker’s Choice.
About the design:
Most 9/11 patches and iconography centers around buildings. We see images of the twin towers, the pentagon, and (often to a lesser degree) the field in Pennsylvania. Even our rucking challenge is built around buildings.
But, the truth we intrinsically know is that we don’t mourn the loss of buildings. We mourn the loss of life.
This month’s patch design contains 228 black dots and 1 white dot. Each black dot represents 13 lives lost that day. The white dot represents 26 lives lost. The total of these dots represent the 2,977 people murdered September 11, 2001.
The all black patch conveys our collective mourning. The raised dots are designed to give you a tactile experience–to “feel” the loss of that horrific day. When it arrives, take a moment and run your fingers across it and think about those numbers.
Finally, the white dot is a reminder that darkness is not the final word. That in the mist of pain, sorrow, and loss, there is always hope. Though not easy to see, it is always there.
